Azerbaijan doesn't agree with the United States on Iran (plus the Daily Show on the Iranian missile tests)

Sunday, July 20, 2008

Today's news is from TRT, and is a response from Azerbaijan to remarks from the ambassador of the United States that Iran could be a threat to Azerbaijan as well in light of its recent missile tests.

No surprise that Azerbaijan wants nothing to do with any sabre rattling on either side considering that Iran has a number of Azeri speakers equal to about twice the population of Azerbaijan just across the border.

Azerbaycan, İran ve Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'yle ilişkilerinin birbirinden bağımsız olduğunu bildirdi.
Azerbaijan has notified that its relations with Iran and the United States would each be independent of the other.
Azerbaycan Dışişleri Bakanlığı Sözcüsü Hazar İbrahim, ülkesinin bölgede barış ve istikrardan yana olduğunu kaydetti.
Hazar Ibrahim, a spokesman for the Azerbaijan foreign minister, said that the country was on the side of peace and stability.
Azerbaycan'ın bağımsız dış politika yürüttüğünü vurgulayan İbrahim, diğer ülkelerle ilişkilerin de eşitlik prensibi çerçevesinde gerçekleştirildiğini belirtti.
Ibrahim, stressing that Azerbaijan would carry out an independent foreign policy, said that relations with other nations would be made in an environment of equality.
ABD'nin Bakü Büyükelçisi Anne Derse, bir süre önce yaptığı açıklamada, 'İran'ın faaliyetlerinin Azerbaycan için de tehlikeli olabileceği' yönünde görüş bildirmiş, açıklama ülke basınında "Washington, Bakü ile Tahran'ın yakınlaşmasına karşı çıkıyor" şeklinde yorumlanmıştı.
Anne Derse, the ambassador of the United States, said in a statement some time ago that "Iran's activities could be a threat also to Azerbaijan", and the statement appeared in the press as "Washington opposed to closer ties between Baku and Tehran".

That reminds me, here's the Daily Show on Iran's Shahab-3 (شهاب-۳, means shooting star, from Arabic šihāb, شهاب) missile tests from the 14th of July just in case you missed it:
