Moldovans that don't know any Russian: 1%

This is from two years ago and the numbers were a bit surprising to me - I had thought the number would be around 25% but it turns out it's just 1.

Results of the latest CBS-AXA survey show that 62% of Moldovans can freely speak, write and read in Russian. According to the same study, 18% of the population can speak and read Russian, but write it sometimes incorrectly, and only 1% of the participants say that they have no knowledge of the Russian language. The CBS-AXA study was done by the Eurasian Monitor, financed by several Russian foundations.

...and I just found the source, which shows a number of other answers that we needed to see to get a total of 100% of respondents. Besides the three answers mentioned in the article then we can also see:

- In general, could communicate with a Russian speaker: 7.3%
- Understand the language, but cannot speak or cannot speak it well: 5.1%
- Can speak in Russian, but cannot write or read: 3.6%
- Know a limited number of words and expressions: 1.5%
- Can ask questions, but understand answers with difficulty: 1.1%
- Difficult to say: 0.4%

Just a few links today.

--- Welsh, Gaelic, Irish and Cornish are making a comeback. I mention this frequently because it's a popular myth that small languages naturally just get swallowed up and destroyed by large languages like water sucked into a sponge, but it's simply not true: in any well-developed country with free speech and minority rights there's no reason for a small language to disappear.

--- The Pope's tweeting in Latin now. I follow that account as of yesterday, as I do any account written entirely in Latin.

--- Last night's dream had a mixture of languages again:

Knew bomber was Romanian in dream upon hearing him use the word dešimț, meaning 12.Dream was wrong, it's Lithuanian for 10 with incorrect t!

We knew the bomb was going to go off at 12 o'clock because the "Romanian" bomber had used the word that in the dream meant 12, but was just Lithuanian 10 with a ț and putting a ț on the end doesn't make a word Romanian (douăsprezece is Romanian for twelve). The bomber, by the way, intended to place the bomb in a fridge he claimed he had come to fix in order to keep us trapped in the 19th century.

--- Plans for Spanish to move into Asia. Another one of those woo Spanish is going to take over the world articles but also with some numbers to note:

In 2000, there were only 1,500 university students studying Spanish in the 90 universities that teach the language but now, there are 25,000. Seventy percent of requests to study Spanish are currently rejected because there are not enough Spanish teachers there to teach them. China “exports” students to 34 Latin American and 22 Spanish universities.

Election tomorrow, Romanian at Oxford, effect of intense language learning on the brain

Tomorrow's the big day so posting is light today and probably non-existent tomorrow. My ideal yet realistic result tomorrow will be:

-- Barack Obama reelection. I personally have a bit of a fondness for Romney but his party needs to lose, and nobody is truly sure what his plans are or whether he can stand up to his own party. He certainly did not even show a hint of that in the primaries.
-- Senate the same at 53 to 47. 53 here includes independents who caucus with Democrats.
-- A Democratic gain of about five to ten seats in the House.
-- Losses for certain candidates like Bachmann, Akin, Joe Wilson, etc.

I would be interested in seeing the attitude of the GOP in such a scenario: they would still have the House but with a slightly weaker toehold, Barack Obama would be a guaranteed two-term president (no more making him a one-term president as the highest priority), and maybe, just maybe, in 2016 a candidate like Huntsman could win the nomination.

-- Speed-learning a language may help brain grow. This was a study where three months of intense study of normal subjects (medicine and cognitive science) was contrasted with three months of language study. Three months of language study was more beneficial to the brain.

Wiki Loves Monuments in Romania

Came across an article here in Romanian on this month's drive for photographs of historical monuments. In Romania there are about 30,000 historical monuments (29,585 to be exact, not sure where the number comes from) and 3,629 of them have photographs in Wikipedia, 994 have geographical coordinates and 175 have information on the architect.

Nearing the end of the month 5,800 images have been sent in, and if there are not too many duplicates this may move the ratio of monuments with pictures from ten percent to twenty.

There is also a monetary incentive here: ten photographers will receive a prize of 600 lei, or $170 USD.

One more multilingual news site: Presseurop

Or rather not just multilingual, but matching. Euronews and Setimes are two others I've mentioned before, and here is another one called Presseurop. That link goes to a Portuguese article on the lack of translators/interpreters in Brussels, and on the top right one can see cs, de, en, es, fr, it, nl, pl, pt, and ro. Clicking on that will take you to the respective article about the same subject.

Not only that, but they seem to be written in the same way, phrase by phrase. For example if we look at the same sentence in the five Romance languages available:

Best language to learn for Madrid court interpreter: Romanian

That would seem to be the conclusion to draw from this article:

Romanian is the most requested language in the courts of Madrid with 28.29% of the total demand in the first half of 2012. Following Romanian were Arabic (15.28%), Mandarin (11.28%), English (7.5%), Wolof (4.89%), Bulgarian (4.44%), Portuguese (2.77%), French (2.67%), Russian (2.64%), and Bengali (2.5%).

It then continues with the ten least requested languages, a weird list to have in the first place because the least requested languages should be those that were requested a total of zero times: probably about 6000 or so languages should fit in there given that there are about 7000 total languages in the world. And one of the languages requested there is extra strange:

el azerí, el bamileké, el broken english, el chino gingtian, el dariya, el finés, el guaraní, el igbo, el luganda y el nepalí

el broken english?

No idea what that means. Unless somebody just wrote that down on a court document and it thus had to be recorded as an official request.

German interview with Michael Studemund-Halévy on Judaeo-Spanish

I found an interesting interview here in German yesterday on Judaeo-Spanish, an interview with a linguist who ended up learning it, in Romania of all places. The interview is quite simple yet informative, and I agree with him in a number of places.

His estimates of the number of speakers:

Weltweit rund 25.000 Menschen. In der Türkei gibt es 22.000 Sepharden, von denen aber nur 600 bis 800 Judenspanisch sprechen. In Bulgarien leben 3.000 Sepharden mit 250 bis 300 Sprechern des Judenspanischen. In Serbien zwei Sprecher, in Slowenien, Bosnien, Herzegowina, Makedonien und Griechenland nur noch wenige. Dafür aber in Paris, London, den USA - und in Israel.

There are around 25,000 speakers worldwide. There are 22,000 Sephardi in Turkey, of which only 600 - 800 speak Judaeo-Spanish. In Bulgaria there are 3,000 of which 250 to 300 speak the language. In Serbia there are two speakers, in Slovenia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Macedonia and Greece also a few. But there are also speakers in Paris, London, the US, and Israel.

Also, according to him:

- Nobody speaks it as a mother tongue anymore
- Yiddish is a good comparison for Judaeo-Spanish, as they are both to a certain extent late medieval variants of their respective mother languages plus a lot of Hebrew influence, spoken by a diaspora

Here's where I strongly agree with him:

Q: Sie haben Französisch, Portugiesisch, Spanisch, Rumänisch und Hebräisch gelernt. Warum?
A: Weil ich frei sein will, alles im Original zu lesen, was ich will.

Q: You have learned French, Portuguese, Spanish, Romanian and Hebrew. Why?
A: Because I want to be free to read everything I want to in the original language.

I answer that question in a similar way: learning another language is the closest I can ever get to directly absorbing another person's thoughts and perspective (e.g. Leto in God Emperor of Dune). If I am doomed along with everybody else to never being able to fully understand even another single person, at least I can acquire a rough approximation, and language is one of the best ways to do it.

And:

Q: Welche Sprache sprechen Sie denn am liebsten?
A: Am stärksten emotional besetzt ist wohl das Portugiesische. Obwohl ich Französische objektiv besser spreche.

Q: Which language do you like to speak the most?
A: Emotionally I feel the strongest toward Portuguese. Although objectively I speak better French.

I feel more or less the same way, though just about Romance languages. Objectively I like the sound of European Portuguese and Romanian the best.

Romania now 19th member of European Space Agency, will launch microsatellite next month

I didn't notice this last month but Romania is now the 19th member of the European Space Agency.

Following promulgation of the law on ratification of Romania to the ESA, Romania officially became the 19th member state on 22 December 2011. It is the second former socialist country after Czech Republic to do so. The leadership of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) will respond to questions from the press on the significance and important provisions of the agreement.


The launch of the Romanian microsatellite GOLIAT will happen with first flight on the European Vega rocket, and is planned for 9 February 2012. The satellite will be integlated with 7 other satellites at the ESA space centre in French Guiana.

How much does Romania pay into the ESA? This pdf should tell us:

More Mondial progress, Chinese in Pakistan from 2013, GRAIL making your own multilingual phrasebook

A lot of quick things to mention today. The first is a simple update to the Mondial dictionary: one page was completed today, giving a total of 2700 words up to the French word fuir. Now when you are looking for a word there is about a one in three chance that it will be there.


Chinese: it seems that the government in Pakistan plans to make Chinese compulsory starting in 2013 from grade six, so stay tuned to see how implementation of this happens. Back in 1980 China had a GDP about seven times that of Pakistan, now it's 27 times larger...plus they are geographically quite close to each other.

GRAIL: launch was delayed and has been rescheduled for tomorrow. Perhaps the most interesting thing about this mission will be its aid in determining whether our moon really was two moons previously, one of which ended up colliding at slow speed with the other. Read about that here.


Finally, a quick sample I made of a multilingual 'phrasebook' from a TED.com video - this one. A five-minute video, I copied and pasted the translations in Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, French, and Romanian, making the example sentences as short as possible (this is key). After about an hour I was able to complete the whole thing. It can also aid in translating into an auxlang like Mondial, Interlingua, Occidental, Ido, etc, as the five languages next to each other may give some ideas. Here is the result when they are all put together.

Looks like there's a Reddit-like site in Romanian too

Found this yesterday, a site called Proddit that uses the same software that Reddit does but is all in Romanian:

You can see that it's certainly not as active as Reddit (though few sites are), and thus you can contribute to the activity of the site by simply signing up (no email address required) and then upvoting and sometimes downvoting links.

It's easily possible to create a subreddit within Reddit in any language, but what you can't do is have subreddits within that, which limits the appeal. It's not possible to have a /r/Romanian/stiinta subreddit, for example. That's why Reddit itself isn't capable of fully appealing to users in another language unless they are content with having a single subreddit and nothing else.

Romanian vocabulary - how much from Latin, Romance, Slavic, other languages?

Looking at the Bulgarian Wikipedia today on Romanian, the following on Romanian vocabulary can be seen:

Според друго изследване, румънската лексика съдържа 71,66% латински елементи (от които само 30,33% са собствени, а останалото е адаптация предимно на френски, латински и италиански думи), 14,17% славянски (български или руски) елементи, 3,91% собствени румънски словосъчетания, 2,71% думи с неясен произход, 2,47% немски думи, 1,7% новогръцки адаптации, 1,43% унгарски адаптации, 0,73% турски думи, а останалото е от дакийския език.

Translation: According to another study the Romanian lexicon contains 71.66% Latin elements (of which 30.33% are from Latin, while the rest is composed primarily of French, Latin and Italian words), 14.7% is of Slavic (Bulgarian and Russian) elements, 3.91% independent Romanian phrases, 2.71% words of uncertain origin, 2.47% German words, 1.7% modern adaptations, 1.43% Hungarian adaptations, 0.73% Turkish words, and the rest is from the Dacian language.

One then wonders how much of the Slavic portion comes from Bulgarian, how much from Russian, and also Old Slavonic. A quick search for Romanian vocabulary 71.66 turns up this page, with the following:

Making a quick assumption that the average fluent speaker would understand about 10,000 -- 20,000 words in a language, (this number also depends on how you define a word), that means learning Romanian to fluency would give one a knowledge of some 1500 - 2500 Slavic words. In English a knowledge of 1000 words gives 72% written text coverage, 2000 words brings it to 79.7%, and by 3000 you're up to 84% comprehension. In short, learning Romanian with particular attention to words of Slavic origin will go a long way towards any Slavic language you intend to pick up later. What Romanian won't bring you, of course, is familiarity with the Cyrillic alphabet. The two Slavic languages with the strongest influence on Romanian don't use the Latin language, and the closest one to them that does use the Latin alphabet is probably Serbo-Croatian when written in the Latin alphabet, being a South Slavic language with vocabulary (but not grammar) similar to Bulgarian.

Peace Corps Volunteers' First Steps in Romanian for Moldova, 1998

I was looking through some books on Eric.ed.gov today and found a few in Romanian, including this one (pdf) for volunteers in Moldova in 1998 that is particularly short. At just over 20 pages, it took just a bit over an hour to type up, except for the alphabet chart and pronunciation guide as that can be found anywhere. The English part (and maybe the Romanian, but I can't tell) is full of typos and mistakes ("good buy", "by cause", "I am share" for "I am sure") and so I've changed quite a bit there.

There are at least four other Romanian textbooks there that are much greater in size (up to 120+ pages), so be sure to do a direct search if you want more.

New Moldovan constitution doesn't mention "Moldovan" as state language

Looks like the Moldovan constitution will no longer claim "Moldovan" to be the state language anymore, which makes sense since the language is Romanian and the previous mention of Moldovan as a separate language was for political purposes only. The acting president mentioned in the article said that there was no need for a separate clause on language in the new constitution since this was already stated in the declaration of independence, which you can read here. The part mentioning Romanian as the country's language is part of a typical long and comma-laden preamble that one sees in these documents.
