Russian president Dmitri Medvedev has given his support for independence to the leaders of separatist South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Foreign Minister Lavrov said to "forget about Georgia's territorial integrity".

ABD Başkanı George Bush’un Gürcistan konusunda Rusya’ya yönelik dünkü sert mesajlarının ardından, bugün Rusya’dan krizi daha da tırmandıracak mesajlar geldi. Following yesterday's tough messages from the president of the United States George Bush to the Russian administration on the issue of Georgia, today messages came from Russia that further escalate the crisis. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov gave the message to the world that "you need to forget about Georgia's territorial integrity". Lavrov stressed that it was not possible to agree on "the logic of forcing South Ossetia and Abkhazia to remain a part of Georgia". He said that the United States' demand for a recognition of Georgia's territorial integrity would be agreed upon by them, and that insisting on this as a precondition for other talks would be an "insult" to the people of South Ossetia.

Lavrov’un bu açıklamaları yaptığı saatlerde Devlet Başkanı Dimitri Medvedev Kremlin’de Güney Osetya ve Abhazya liderleriyle görüşüyordu. Medvedev, iki ayrılıkçı lidere, statüleriyle ilgili ne karar alırlarsa alsınlar, Moskova’nın bu kararın sadece destekçisi değil, aynı zamanda garantörü olacağını belirtti, yani bağımsızlık ilanını destekleyeceği mesajını verdi.

When Lavrov was making this announcement President Dmitri Medvedev was meeting with the leaders of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in the Kremlin. Medvedev gave the message to the two separatist leaders that no matter what status was decided upon, that Moscow would not be simply a supporter of the status but also a guarantor, that is, that they would support a declaration of independence.

Russia also warned the United States on the issue of aiding Georgia. A statement by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that "The United States needs to avoid encouraging the Georgian leaders against actions that could result in a repetition of the recent days' tragic scenario."

Almanya Başbakanı Angela Merkel yarın Medvedev ile yapacağı görüşmede de Rusya’nın Batı ile ciddi bir uçurum oluşmasını önlemek için sert söylemlerden kaçınmasını ve diplomasiye öncelik vermesini isteyecek.

While the tension stepped up between the United States and Russia, Germany called for moderation and a softening of Russia's tone. In a meeting tomorrow with Medvedev, German Chancellor Angela Merkel will ask that Russia stay away from tough talk and put diplomacy first in order to prevent a disaster from happening.

Alman Federal Meclisi Dış İlişkiler Komisyonu ise bugün Gürcistan’daki gelişmeleri masaya yatırdı. Yapılan özel oturumda Almanya Dışişleri Bakanı Frank Walter-Steinmeier Kafkasya’daki krizde Rusya ve ABD arasında diyalogdan yana olduklarını vurguladı. Komisyon Başkanı Ruprecht Polenz de, Rusya’nın katılımı olmadan krizden çıkış yolu bulunamayacağını hatırlatarak, şu an suçlamaların zamanı olmadığını, arabuluculuk çabalarına ağırlık verilmesi gerektiğini kaydetti.

The German Bundestag Commission of Foreign Affairs today treated the developments in Georgia. In a special sitting the German Foreign Affairs Minister Frank Walter-Steinmeier stressed that they were in favour of dialogue between Russia and the United States in the crisis. The head of the commission Ruprecht Polenz also reminded that without the participation of Russia no way would be found out of the crises, that now was not the time for accusations and that importance needed to be given to efforts in mediation.

Türkiye de bölgede gerginliğin yatışması için çabalarını sürdürüyor. Dün Moskova’da temaslarda bulunan Başbakan Recep Tayyip Erdoğan bugün de Tiflis’te Gürcistan Devlet Başkanı Mihail Saakaşvili ile biraraya geldi. Erdoğan, Türkiye olarak Gürcistan’ın bağımsızlığının, egemenliğinin ve uluslararası hukuk ile BM Güvenlik Konseyi kararlarınca tanınan toprak bütünlüğünün muhafaza edilmesinden yana olduklarını söyledi. Erdoğan, Kafkasya’da barış, güvenlik ve istikrar için bir işbirliği platformu oluşturulması fikrini de temasları sırasında ele aldıklarını kaydetti.

Turkey is also continuing efforts to calm down tensions in the region. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had meetings in Moscow yesterday, and today met with the Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili in Tbilisi. Erdoğan said that Turkey was on the side of Georgia's independence, sovereignty and the protection of its territorial integrity through international law and a United Nations Security Council resolution on its recognition. Erdoğan said that they discussed ideas on the creation of a cooperative platform for peace, security and stability in the Caucasus in the course of the meeting.
