Interlingua to be spoken by participant at autism conference in Porto, Portugal
Saturday, October 11, 2008
Interesting experiment here, and reminiscent of the approach Interlingua took in the early days when they used to create documents for scientists/doctors/etc. to read and be astounded by when they realized they could understand the language. It's also a good idea because those that learn IALs often realize that they have little in common with the people they are now speaking the language with (just because you both know an IAL doesn't mean you'll necessarily get along) whereas in a meeting like this the people gathered there already have a lot in common. Here's what it says:
The participants of a conference on autism in the northern Portuguese city of Porto will have an extraordinary experience on the 24th to 25th of October.
At the invitation by the Portuguese Association for Disorders* and Development and Autism, one of the diligent users of Interlingua, Martijn Dekker from the Netherlands, will present his discourse in Interlingua.
Martijn Dekkes has previous experiments in giving discourses in conferences on his experiences and ideas with the so-called Asperger Syndrome, but normally gives them in Dutch and English. Since not all of the public in the conference in Porto understand English, he has gotten permission to speak in Interlingua instead.
"Some months before I met one of the organizers of the current conference, and when I spoke in Interlingua with him, he understood be perfectly. As a result, (because of?) eliminating the need for translation, I have the permission and encouragement from the organizers to give my discourse completely in Interlingua," said Martijn Dekker.
The questiones of the audience will be translated, as he does not know Portuguese.
A Canadian friend of Martijn Dekker will present another discourse in English at the conference. She doesn't speak Interlingua actively (yet), but her electronic slides* will be translated into Interlingua to make then bilingual.
