Mobile phone in Welsh to be available starting September 2009
Monday, August 10, 2009
After a mobile phone in Irish being made available in 2008, now one in Welsh will be available starting next month, developed by Samsung and Orange. Not only is the OS in Welsh but it also recognizes 44,000 Welsh words when typing. The phone was made in response to strong demand from Welsh speakers and until other models are made they will have a monopoly on those that want a phone in Welsh.
Scottish Gaelic speakers want their own too. A mobile phone would be a big deal for Gaelic, which is in a much more precarious (though nowhere near extinct) position than Welsh and Irish.
