Possible Cash for Clunkers program in Canada too
Friday, August 07, 2009
Considering the program's success and popularity in the United States (and a similar one in Germany too) it's no surprise that there's some debate about incorporating a similar one north of the border as well. The Globe and Mail has an article here today about the subject. Canada technically has a program to trade in old cars at the moment, but it doesn't have anything to do with purchasing a newer, more fuel-efficient car at the same time, and only offers a bus pass or a bicycle in return. That program is more about getting decrepit pieces of junk off the road as opposed to upgrading old cars and stimulating buying.
Canada has a minority government right now, and that makes a possible bill like this a pretty easy one to pass considering the parties in the opposition - the Liberals, NDP and the Bloc. The NDP loves issues like this one, and the Liberals would be hard-pressed to oppose a program of that type. The only way they could oppose a program of that type would be if they felt it didn't go far enough, so if the Conservatives wanted to create a Canadian Cash for Clunkers program it would have to be fairly bold.
The Canadian government has been monitoring the program since its inception, even before it was deemed a success. All signs point to it being an easy sell. If you're Canadian and are in support of it you might want to contact your MP directly.

There is a reason why people choose to drive a used car instead of buy a new one. They cannot afford a new one. This government program would encourage people to buy cars that they cannot afford. Now that the housing bubble has burst, it is time to create the automobile bubble!
