11 metre asteroid 2010 AL30 to swing by the Earth on Wednesday
Wednesday, January 13, 2010
March 2009 was a big month for asteroids coming out of nowhere to graze the Earth, and there were a few more throughout the year as well. Looks like 2010 is starting off big with an asteroid called 2010 AL30 which will pass by at a distance just one third that from the Earth to the Moon. The trajectory of this asteroid can be seen here:
Compare just how close this is with other near-Earth approaches in the next few days (LD = Lunar Distance, the distance from Earth to the Moon):
Object Name | Close Approach Date | Miss Distance (LD) | Estimated Diameter* | H (mag) | Relative Velocity (km/s) |
(2010 AF3) | 2010-Jan-13 | 20.4 | 16 m - 35 m | 26.2 | 7.10 |
(2010 AL30) | 2010-Jan-13 | 0.3 | 11 m - 24 m | 27.0 | 9.95 |
(2010 AG30) | 2010-Jan-14 | 2.7 | 11 m - 24 m | 27.0 | 18.64 |
(2009 BK2) | 2010-Jan-15 | 71.8 | 23 m - 52 m | 25.3 | 5.37 |
(2009 DA43) | 2010-Jan-17 | 35.6 | 33 m - 73 m | 24.5 | 4.72 |
(2010 AE30) | 2010-Jan-18 | 19.4 | 57 m - 130 m | 23.4 | 11.35 |
(2008 XM) | 2010-Jan-18 | 30.8 | 290 m - 640 m | 19.8 | 34.03 |
(2010 AG3) | 2010-Jan-19 | 8.9 | 7.9 m - 18 m | 27.6 | 4.73 |
There seems to be an error in the chart on 2010 AL30 though as it should be as bright as a 14th magnitude star, not 26.2.
