Equatorial Guinea makes Portuguese its third official language

From an article here in Spanish about ten days ago. Here's part of it:

The president of Equatorial Guinea Teodoro Obiang gave a decree today making Portuguese the third official language of the country, as had been approved by the unicameral assembly last April.

Obiang's decree says that "the official languages of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea are Spanish, French and Portuguese. Aboriginal languages are recognized as integral to the national culture."

It adds that "the inclusion of Portuguese as an official language in Equatorial Guinea will positively contribute to the increase of cooperation in an Afro-Iberic and Luso-Hispanic context."

Last may, the governments of Equatorial Guinea and Portugal agreed on the opening of embassies in Lisboa and Malabo. Portugal, with a strong presence in Africa due to the ex-Portuguese colonies in the continent, also has a large interest in the summit of the African Union which will occur in Equatorial Guinea in 2011.
