Amid fears of devaluation, Turkmens rush to exchange money

Türkmenistan'da halk, devalüasyon söylentileri üzerine döviz bürolarına akın etti. Şu an serbest piyasada 1 doların 25 bin manat olduğu Türkmenistan'da halkın ellerindeki dolarları bozdurmak istemesi sonucu döviz büroları ve bankaların önünde yağmur ve soğuk havaya rağmen uzun kuyruklar oluştu.

People in Turkmenistan have been rushing to currency exchange offices amid rumors of devaluation. Right now in the free market one dollar is equal to 25,000 Turkmen manat, and as a result of people wanting to exchange the dollars they own there are long lines in front of exchange offices and banks in spite of rain and cold weather.

İsmini vermek istemeyen bir Türkmen, "Her yerde söylentiler dolaşıyor, biri kurun 6,250 manat olacağını söylerken diğeri 16 bin, bir diğeri ise 12 bin manat olacağını söylüyor. Halk da ellerindeki doları satmak için birbiriyle yarışıyor" dedi.

One Turkmen who did not wish to be named said that "There are rumours going around everywhere; one says that the rate is going to be 6,250 manat, another says 16,000, and another's saying 12,000. People are competing against each other to sell dollars."

1 Ocak 2008 itibariyle açılmasına izin verilen döviz bürolarının sayısının sınırlı olmasının da yığılmalara neden olduğu belirtiliyor. Bu arada Türkmen hükümeti, endişe edilecek bir durum olmadığı açıklaması yaparken, devlet kontrolündeki medya sessizliğini koruyor. Merkez Bankası'ndan bir yetkili yaptığı açıklamada, "Olay tümüyle spekülasyondan ibaret" diye konuştu.

One reason for the crowds is that the number of exchange offices has been limited since January 1st 2008, when they were first given permission to open. Through this the Turkmen government has commented saying that the situation would not be a cause for concern, and has preserved media silence under control of the state. A bank authority said in a statement that the "event is composed of complete speculation."

Daha önce resmi kurda 5,200 manat olan dolar, Gurbanguli Berdimuhammedov'un müdahalesinden sonra 20 bin manat olmuştu.

Before the official rate was 5,200 manat to one dollar, but since Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedow's intervention it has become 20,000 manat.
