Ecclesiastes in Afrikaans: 1:1 - 1:12
Saturday, May 03, 2008
As I've been using Ecclesiastes for a while now to learn languages and am currently using it to study Bulgarian, it also helps to go over the content in other languages such as when I translated it into Ido. Afrikaans is another language that doesn't have as much content online to learn it as there should be, so it would be good to contribute to that at the same time, which is why I'm going to go over it in Afrikaans as well.
If you don't know what Afrikaans is, it's quite easy: Afrikaans is spoken in South Africa and Namibia, and came from Dutch, but changed over a few hundred years to become its own language. As a result the grammar is much simpler and that makes Afrikaans one of the easiest languages that a unilingual English speaker can learn. The only languages that are probably easier are creoles like Tok Pisin and Bislama. The only parts that are a bit challenging for an English speaker are word order, pronunciation of g, and how adjectives change before nouns like in German. The plural can be irregular too. That's nothing compared to three genders, tons of verb irregularities, and cases like you have in German.
A good site to learn Afrikaans online is afrikaans.us.
Oh, and because the languages are so similar I'll be putting entire sections in brackets instead of single words like I've been doing with Bulgarian.
Also, please let me know if you speak Afrikaans and would like to record an mp3 of this (or know of a place to find them). I'll be very grateful.
- 1:12 Ek, Prediker, was koning oor Israel in Jerusalem.
