Turkish president Abdullah Gul on support for Georgia and a Union of the Caucasus / Gül'den Gürcistan'a destek, Kafkas Birliği'ne de destek

More news from Turkish related to the war in South Ossetia between Georgia and Russia, and Turkey's role. I certainly agree that Turkey needs to be strong and stable in the region as almost no other nearby countries are.

If one good thing comes out of this war it might be that Azerbaijan and Armenia get to see up close again that often there is no real winner in these conflicts over breakaway provinces/states, and perhaps this will help them cool their heads over their disputed regions as well. Well, no winners except Abkhazia, which basically got to sit back and watch the whole thing happen with no damage to their infrastructure and only a conflict in the Kodori Valley, while the Georgian military in front of it and in the Black Sea was severely weakened. South Ossetia certainly isn't better off, Russia is facing the prospect of becoming a pariah once again, and Georgia's obviously weaker.

ANKARA- Gürcistan'ın toprak bütünlüğünün korunması gerektiğini söyleyen Cumhurbaşkanı Abdullah Gül, Bakü-Tiflis-Ceyhan boru hattı ile ilgili bir güvenlik sorunu olmadığını söyledi.

Ankara - Turkish president Abdullah Gül spoke of the need for Georgia's territorial integrity to be protected, and said that there were no no security problems with the BTC (Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan) pipeline.

Gül, Dışişleri Bakanı Ali Babacan ve bakanlık yetkilileri ile Çankaya’da bir Kafkaslar zirvesi yaptı.

President Gül had a Caucasus summit in Çankaya with foreign minister Ali Babacan and ministry authorities.

Zirve sonrası basına açıklama yapan ve soruları yanıtlayan Cumhurbaşkanı Gül, Bakü-Tiflis-Ceyhan Boru hattının savaş ortamında zarar görüp görmeyeceğine ilişkin bir soruya, “Bakü Tiflis Ceyhan boru hattında bir sorun yoktur. Gürcistan bölümünde bir sorun yoktur. Bunlar barışçı amaçla yapılmış boru hatlarıdır ve bunları kimsenin hedef alması söz konusu değildir” karşılığını verdi.

After the summit President Gül made an announcement and answered questions; in response to the question about whether the BTC Pipeline saw any damage in the war, he responded that "There are no problems with the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline. There are no problems in the Georgian section. These are pipelines made with peaceful objectives and there is no question of them being targeted."

Cumhurbaşkanı Gül, şunları söyledi:

President Gül said the following:

“Türkiye’nin insani yardım başlatmasından büyük memnuniyet duyuyoruz. Türkiye önümüzdeki günlerde de bu yardımlarını sürdürecektir. Türkiye barışçı amaçla her zaman bu tür yardımları gösterdi. Kafkaslarda da Gürcistan’da da gösteriyor. Bunun herkese örnek olması gerektiğine inanıyorum. Bölgede çatışmalardan etkilenen Türkler de var. Bunların bir kısmı basın mensubu. Bunların Türkiye’ye sağ salim dönmesi için Dış İşleri gerekli çalışmaları yapıyor. Yaralı olan bir Türk gazetecinin bir an önce getirilmesi için gerekli izinler alınmak üzere. Gürcistan’da ayrıca vatandaşlarımız da var. Azerbaycan üzerinden dönmek isteyenlere Azerbaycan gerekli yardımları yapmaktadır.”

We feel very glad that Turkey has begun humanitarian aid. Turkey will continue this aid in the coming days as well. Through peaceful objectives Turkey has always shown this type of aid, in the Caucasus region and in Georgia. I believe that everyone needs to set an example in this. There are Turks affected by the conflicts in the region as well. A part of these is the press. Foreign affairs needs to work to bring them back to Turkey safe and sound. Necessary permissions are being obtained for a Turkish journalist to be sent back as soon as possible. Our citizens are also in Georgia. Azerbaijan is providing the required aid for those that want to return via Azerbaijan.

Türkiye’nin Gürcistan’ın bir komşusu olarak bölgede barış için gerekli çalışmaları sürüdüreceğini yineleyen Gül, “Gürcistan’ın toprak bütünlüğünün korunması gerektiğini düşünüyoruz. Başbakanın da söylediği gibi orta vadede Kafkas Birliği’nin hayata geçirilmesi gerekir. Balkanlar ve Orta Doğu ile ilgili girişimlerimiz de oldu. Aynı şekilde Kafkaslar için de bu tür girişimlerin elzem olduğunu düşünüyoruz. Umarım bu düşüncemiz desteklenecek ve bölgemizde barış ve istikrar sağlanacaktır” dedi.

President Gül, repeated that as a neighbour of Georgia that Turkey continues to carry out the needed work for peace in the region, said that "We believe that the territorial integrity of Georgia needs to be protected. As the prime minister said, we need a Union of the Caucasus / Caucasian Union to be passed in the medium term. We had initiatives in the Balkans and the Middle East as well. In the same way we believe that this type of initiative is indispensable for the Caucasus. I hope that our idea will be supported and that peace and stability will be provided in our region."

Cumhurbaşkanı Gül, dünyadaki önemli olayların hep Türkiye’nin çevresinde yaşandığını da belirterek, “Önce Irak sonra Lübnan ve Filistin olayları ve şimdi de Gürcistan’daki olaylar. Tüm bunlar şunu gösteriyor ki, Türkiye bölgede her zaman güçlü olmalı istikrarlı olmalı ekonomisi ve silahlı kuvvetleri güçlü olmalı ve daima istikrarını muhafaza etmelidir. Bu amaçla herkesin duyarlı olduğunu düşünüyorum ve bundan sonra da ülkemize hepimizin çok daha fazla sahip çıkması gerektiğini düşünüyorum” diye konuştu.

President Gül explained that important events in the world were happening in the vicinity of Turkey, saying that "First there was Iraq, then the events in Lebanon and Palestine, and now the events in Georgia. All these show that Turkey always needs to be strong in the region, needs to be stable, its economy and armed forces need to be strong and continually needs to safeguard the peace. I think everybody is sensitive with this aim and I believe that from hereon as well this is what we all need to adopt towards our country as well."
