First mosque ever set up in Fukuoka, Japan

Fukuoka Masjid, the first mosque in Kyushu and Yamaguchi, has been completed in Hakozaki, Higashi-ku, Fukuoka City. The ceremony to open the mosque took place on the 12th where about 100 worshipers prayed.

The mosque has been set up in a quiet residential area, has a basement and three floors. The first floor is the worshiping area for men, 2nd floor for women, the other floor has a meeting area, library, kitchen etc.

Fukuoka Prefecture has about 600 Muslims mostly composed of people from Indonesia, Egypt, Libya and various African countries, and there are about 1000 Muslims in total in Kyushu.

Students at Kyushu University had been using a room in the exchange student hall to pray but wanted their own facilities and began collecting money for it in 1998. They collected about 50 million yen ($500,000) from Muslims within the country and abroad, and bought the land for construction in 2005.

This is the third true mosque to be built in Japan after Tokyo and Kobe.
