How to escape from an exploding Soyuz rocket

YouTube has two videos showing the escape process for the Soyuz rocket, activated twice (perhaps more?) in 1969 and 1983. The rocket has an impressive success rate of 98% over 1700 launches, and as the videos show even failure isn't necessarily fatal. The first video is unmanned, but the second one contained a manned crew which was taken to a safe location 6 km away.
