This isn't new, but rather a video that I just stumbled upon that is partly about preventing Alzheimer's and also just about the mental makeup of those that are best at chess. David Shenk wrote a book on the history of chess and is shown here in an interview on Good Morning America (embedding has been disabled for this video so it can't be shown here) in 2006 where they talk about some of the research on how chess can prevent Alzheimer's.
By the way, who can name the chess capital of the world off the top of their head?

Give up? It's the Republic of Kalmykia (Russian:Респу́блика Калмы́кия; Kalmyk: Хальмг Таңһч). It's part of Russia and located along the Caspian Sea but the language there (Kalmyk) is of the Mongolic branch, its official religion is Buddhism, and its president Kirsan Nikolayevich Ilyumzhinov (Кирса́н Никола́евич Илюмжи́нов) is the president of FIDE, the World Chess Federation, or Fédération Internationale des Échecs.
