Stealth translation on Wikipedia, this time in Occidental: Dismissal of labour in Argentina (Despido laboral en Argentina)
Wednesday, July 09, 2008
In 2005 when I first learned Ido I did a lot of work on the Wikipedia and Wiktionary, which took up a ton of my free time and I eventually had to stop after I realized that people need to work to make money to live (man cannot live by auxlang alone as the saying goes). One way to try to bring attention to Ido was to translate articles that were on the main page of the English Wikipedia, since on the left side would be a small link that says: In other languages with Ido written underneath. That meant that the best articles were those that weren't translated into other languages yet, because if they were it meant that the word Ido would simply get lost in with all the other languages. If an article on the main page had too many translations in other languages that meant that I would go for another section like did you know...? because those are on the main page as well, though they generally don't get quite the same attention.
I like to think that I brought Ido a lot of attention with that but I also wonder if perhaps a lot of people took a look at the language, shrugged their shoulders and went back about their business. Perhaps a language like Ido doesn't have quite the same gravitas as a language that can be largely read at first sight. So to test this I'll be doing translations of pieces on the main page of Wikipedia into Occidental to see what the reaction is, if any. Once Lingua Franca Nova gets its own Wikipedia approved, I'll probably do the same thing there as well.
In the meantime, let's see what people on Wikipedia think of Occidental. This time I'm going to be translating articles from the Spanish Wikipedia, for three reasons:
- I'm studying Spanish;
- Occidental is easier for Spanish people to read than those who speak only English;
- English people are notorious for their lack of interest in other languages; people who have other languages as a mother tongue, not so much.
I suspect though that this might actually benefit Interlingua instead, because Occidental doesn't really have much of a web presence, the site you go to to learn the language and start using it with other people. It makes a good first impression (hey, I can read most of this!), but then leaves people out in the cold when it comes to making the next step, and that might be when the prospective student finds another language that looks quite similar, and goes with that.
Here's the original article. Since the goal here is to simply get attention, I don't mind if the Spanish-English translation is a bit rough.
Edit July 10th: a very kind anonymous commenter has looked over the whole article and made a number of corrections and suggestions, and I've changed the Occidental text in accordance with them. You can still see the original one I wrote in the history of the Occidental Wikipedia.

As the requirements for a job dismissal and the consequences of every decision are regulated by legislation, there are differences by country in which rules are applied. This article deals exclusively with layoffs of workers who, by being employed in Argentina, are governed by the laws of this country. In the labour law in Argentina the dismissal of labour is regulated by the law of employment contract (the LCT) approved by the law 20,744 in 1974 with some subsequent reforms with some supplementary provisions. In 1976 was issued the decree 390/76 which adopted a writ that incorporates these reforms, which sometimes is mentioned as law 20,744. |
