French only! Letter to the editor at Le Devoir gives some helpful suggestions for promoting the French language in Quebec

So, how many of these suggestions are good ones?

(yes, I know my French translations are rough. Leave suggestions/corrections below if you find any glaring mistakes)

Il semblerait qu'il manque des idées au gouvernement libéral de Jean Charest et au Conseil du patronat pour la francisation des entreprises pour la réunion du 10 octobre prochain; eh bien, en voilà:

It would seem that there's a lack of ideas in the Liberal government of Jean Charest and in the Quebec Council of Employers for the Frenchification of companies for the meeting the next 10th of October; well, here they are:

Toute raison sociale au Québec doit être en français ou francisée. Si Bureau en gros, La Source, etc., peuvent le faire, tout le monde peut le faire. Si le droit international s'oppose à cela, eh bien, on passera à côté du droit international.

All business names in Quebec should be in French or Frenchified. If Bureau en Gros (Staples), La Source (The Source) etc. can do it, everyone should do it. If international law opposes it, then it'll go to international law.

Tout affichage intérieur et extérieur doit être en français seulement.

All interior and exterior displays should be in French only.

Tout reçu ou compte, facture (exemple: compte de taxes, facture d'Hydro, relevé de carte de crédit, etc.) au Québec doit être en français seulement. Ou, si le client le demande, il pourra être bilingue avec prédominance du français. Rien en anglais seulement.

All receipts or accounts and bills (example: tax accounts, hydro bills, credit card statements, etc.) in Quebec should be in French only. Or, if the client requests it, it can be bilingual with French predominant. Never in English only.

Tout formulaire à remplir (par exemple une demande d'emploi, tout formulaire gouvernemental, etc.) doit être en français seulement. Si le client le demande, le formulaire pourra être bilingue, mais avec prédominance du français. Rien en anglais seulement.

All forms to be filled (for example an application for employment, all government forms, etc.) should be in French only. If the client requests, the forms can be bilingual, but with French predominant. Never in English only.

Tout client doit être abordé en français seulement par un employé. Les «Bonjour-Hi» ou les «Hi» tout court doivent cesser. On aborde tout le monde avec un «bonjour» et on lui parle en français en premier. Si le client insiste pour parler anglais, c'est «OK». Mais il est important que si le client parle français avec un fort accent, de ne pas lui parler en anglais. Si le client accepte de parler français, on doit continuer en français.

All clients should be addressed in French only by an employee. The "bonjour - Hi" and "hi"s should stop short. One should talk to everybody with a "bonjour" and then talk in French first. If the client insists on talking in English, it's "OK". But it is important that the client not speak (turn to) English even if he has a strong accent. If the client agrees to speak in French, we should continue in French.

Tout message téléphonique doit être en français seulement. Après que le message en français est complètement fini, le client aura l'option de le réécouter en anglais. Mais le client n'aura jamais l'option de passer à l'anglais avant que le message en français ne soit complètement fini.

All phone messages should be in French only. After the message in French has completely finished, the client will have the option to listen to it again in English. But the client would never have the option to go to English before the message in French is completely finished.

La musique d'ambiance à la radio doit être sur un poste en français. Aucun poste de radio ou enregistrement en anglais comme ambiance sur le lieu de travail.

The background music on the radio at work should be in French. No radio stations or recordings in English in the background in the workplace.

Les postes de radio anglophones qui sont littéralement antifrancophones, comme CJAD, doivent être fermés. Toute communication au Québec doit promouvoir la langue française. Même un poste de radio anglophone doit promouvoir la langue française.

Anglophone radio stations that are literally anti-francophone, like CJAD, should be closed. All communication in Quebec should promote the French language. Even an English radio station should promote the French language.
