TedX speech in Scots on Scots

Interesting video here from TedX all in Scots and about Scots. The guy giving the speech is a neuroscientist and talks about how the brain reacts differently to an L1 vs. an L2, even if the two are really close. In this case they are close enough that you should be able to understand most of it, and even more so if you know another Germanic language. Check out 14:32 or so for example where he uses the word Künstler or however it's spelled in Scots.

More Scots, academic this time

I've posted a video of Scots before to show what it's like to listen to a closely-related language, an experience that English speakers rarely get to have. Speakers of other languages such as Portuguese, Serbian, Bulgarian, Norwegian etc. get to hear related languages much more frequently.

The last one I posted was a chapter of the New Testament, but this sample is even more interesting as it is about a modern subject.

Scotland's own Nynorsk

That is the subject of a post here that readers here will find interesting, one that compares Scotland to Norway around the time Nynorsk was being researched and standardized. The article deals with Scottish English, Scots and Gaelic, but the extinct Norn is not addressed.

What Portuguese sounds like to Spanish speakers (and vice versa)

English has no real close cousins as most other languages do, among major national languages that is. But Scots seems to be just about right, about the same as Portuguese vs. Spanish, Turkish vs. Uzbek, and so on.
